Series notes

Alfred Hitchcock, who had been directing movies for three decades, came to television in the mid 1950's with stories of terror, suspense and twisted endings. It started as the half hour Alfred Hitchcock Presents and after 7 seasons was expanded to and hour with the title The Alfred Hitchcock Hour for 3 more seasons. In the 1980s the show was revived with episodes produced over 4 years. Each episode was introduced by Hitchcock with a few well chosen witty remarks and sometimes included a jab at the sponsor. After the episode Hitchcock had closing comments. Since often it appeared evil triumphed which was in violation of the television code of ethics Hitchcock would explain how something did the villain in. All of the introduction and closing remarks were written by James Allardice.

Many of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour episodes were adaptions of previously published works. These included works from Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine as well as some novellas and short stories. The first 2 seasons of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour ran on CBS and for season 3 moved to NBC.

In the U.S. there have not been any DVD releases for The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. In Australia a DVD box set The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: The Complete Series was released on July 21, 2021 by Via Vision. It is NTSC format and the region code is such that it plays on U.S. DVD players. In the U.K. a DVD box set The Alfred Hitchcock Hour - The Complete Collection was released on January 11, 2016 by Fabulous Films. However it is PAL format with region 2 and does not play on U.S. DVD players.

Guide notes

Does not include any of the 1955-1962 or 1985-1989 Alfred Hitchcock Presents episodes. Synopses are adapted from several sources. Credits are as listed on the DVD release episodes. Things not in the on screen credits are in brackets.

This guide has updated airdates for the two episodes effected by the coverage of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This is based on research done by Martin Grams Jr. and Patrick Wikstrom which is in their book The Alfred Hitchcock Presents Companion published on January 1, 2001. Most information on the internet has not been updated with their findings. One online source for this information is How Lee Harvey Oswald F***ed Up Television History . For the airing changes see the episode notes for Body in the Barn and The Cadaver. This also changes the episode numbers for many of the season 2 episodes.
