Series notes

This Western adventure is set in 1870 Arizona Territory. Hondo had once been a Confederate Cavalry officer, and had lived with the Apaches for a time only to see his Indian bride, who was Chief Vittoro's daughter, slain by the army in a massacre. Now he traveled with a dog named Sam, serving as an U.S. Army scout attached to Fort Lowell. Apache are attacking soldiers and settlers, and Hondo is asked by Colonel Crook, Army Commander in the Arizona Territory, to help bring peace between the Indians and the white man.

The series was based on a screen play by James Edward Grant for the 1953 feature film Hondo which starred John Wayne. These were from works by Louis L'Amour, both the short story entitled The Gift of Cochise and the novel the author later expanded it into.

In the U.S.the show originally ran on ABC on Fridays, 8:30 to 9:30 pm. The first two episodes were made into the movie Hondo and the Apaches. The complete series was released on DVD in the U.S. on June 6, 2017 by Warner Archives.
